BIG SISTER PROJECT
THE POWER OF CONNECTING WITH A STRANGER
“AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER, WE ALL NEED ACCESS TO SUPPORT AND ADVICE. AT TIMES THE MOST USEFUL PEOPLE ARE STRANGERS.”
— MARIO L SMALL, SOCIOLOGIST, HARVARD UNIVERSITY
Young girls are twice as likely to suffer from depression than boys
Over 70% of girls avoid going to school when they are body-conscious
Over 2 million teens/young women report depressive episodes as debilitating
In the past few years there has been an overall 70% increase of self harm related injuries arriving in A&EGirls today often feel more fragile, less resilient and overwhelmed than students in their parents’ generation
Anxiety and depression on the rise since 2012
Girls are more at risk than boys
Social and Cultural politics are a stressor in many teen/young adult environments
Girls are maturing into puberty at a time when technology and social media defines much of their life
Being a teenager/young adult is a draining full time job
Constant pressure from phones and relationships
Many teen girls feel overexposed and pressured to look/act/and perform in certain ways to be liked or accepted.
Traditional methods of talk therapy (also known as psychotherapy) have been used in the treatment of emotional disorders and mental illness for centuries. Unfortunately, teenagers don’t fare as well with this approach as much as we would like them to.
Sometimes all they need is a friend.
A key reason for seeking the confidence of strangers is they can more quickly bypass the pity or sympathy and re-direct the understanding straight to the “I know what it’s really like”, empathy. There is so much power in feeling understood and finding a tribe or a single person that really understands our situation.
With that in mind, The Big Sister Project was created to help teenage girls who are struggling with different aspects in life. Our focus is to bond, understand and guide without having them in an office, sitting on a chair, with that feeling of being treated for an illness that doesn't exist.
Sometimes all they need is a Big Sister, who will truly understand what they are going through, who will listen without being critical and who will guide without being harsh.
Teenagers sometimes feel lost. They feel like nothing makes any sense, and that can be devastating for some.
Our goal is to help change their perspective, see the bright side in life and empower their inner self. All that with the power of friendship.
Our Goals:
Embedding a Positive Self-Image
Empowering their Intuition/Inner Wisdom
Seeking out Positive Media/Peer Influences
Teaching Healthy Self-Care
Healthy Acceptance and Approach of Obstacles/Emotions
Imparting the Ability to Dream Big
A More Positive and Empowered Attitude towards Life
Improved Critical Thinking
